Opatha, H.H.D.N.P.
This paper provides a description of the Employee Performance Evaluation Systems (EPESs) in five selected manufacturing firms in Sri Lanka and an evaluation of those systems in the light of an evaluative framework developed from the current theoretical arguments, empineal findings and expert opinion. The evaluative framework has its focus on eight dimensions of Employee Performance Evaluation System (EPES) including Employee Performance Evaluation (EPE) purposes, EPE policies, EPE criteria and standards, EPE methods, feedback interviews, evaluator training, practices for ensuring accurate implementation and review and renewal. The results indicate that the degrees of systematic utilization/quality of EPESs in three firms (A, C, and D) are moderate and those of EPESs in two firms (B and E) are low as per 5-point scale suggesting significant&#13;
revisions to be made to the EPESs so as to improve them.

The quality of higher education is determined by the performance of the students who have the opportunity to receive higher education. At present, the raw aggregate marks of the G.C.E. (A/L) examination is used as the selection criteria of students for universities.&#13;
Whether raw aggregate marks can represent the performance of students at G.C.E. (A/L)examination is a question that is currently debated on.&#13;
This study was carried out to investigate the correlation among subject grades, to find out whether mean aggregate differences exist between (a) districts, (b) repeat and first attempt students and (c) male and female. It also investigates the distribution of grades in different subjects.&#13;
For this study G.C.E. (A/L) results (Science subjects) of 1995 and 1996 were used.&#13;
Univariate Analysis, Chi-square (contingency table analysis), ANOVA and Analysis of&#13;
Means procedure were used for analysis of data.&#13;
High degrees of correlation among subject grades were observed in the results. Most of the time mean aggregates of different districts were significantly different. No significant&#13;
difference was observed in repeat and first attempt students while male to female&#13;
difference was greater in Physical Science subjects. Distributions of grades in different&#13;
subjects are different to each other. in the same subject stream, some subjects showed left skewed distributions while other subjects showed right skewed distributions. In this context it can be concluded that adding of raw subject marks to form raw aggregate, which is the current practice, as a basis for admission to the universities is not a proper method of selection of students for university education. Some type of scaling for location dispersion of the distribution of marks is needed instead of using the aggregate marks as an indicator of performance.

Conventional approaches to motivation use external stimuli, tangible or perceived, as the&#13;
instrument of motivation, and these approaches may produce incongruence in our value&#13;
system, and trigger off stress and related mental and physical disorders. Higher human&#13;
output is safely and best achieved through harmonizing the external stimuli with physical&#13;
and physiological needs and the value base of workers. Some recently emerging&#13;
approaches in the West have explicitly departed from conventional confinements, but&#13;
without significant success. A new wave of thoughts that relies on inner resident energy of&#13;
man is sweeping the Western management arena. This new wave of thoughts which draws parallels to insight akin to Buddhism, may pave a way for a paradigm shift in motivation theory in the new millennium.

<summary type="text">Impact of Marketing Strategy on Market Share of Ornamental Horticultura Exports ; The SFfLankan Case.
Rosairo, H. S. Rohitha
This study examines the marketing strategy adopted by Sri Lankan exporters of Ornamental Horticultura Products. Sri Lanka; as a country, has a very small and shrinking market share in the expanding main world markets for these producis. Product, promotion and marketing information are the facets of strategy under consideration. Research was carried out using a cross sectional survey. Primary data were gathered from personal interviews using a questionnaire. Representatives from a total of 40 private sector firms were interviewed.Hypotheses were tested using one tail hypothesis testing of the population mean. Statistical analysis was done using ANOVA, regression and correlation analysis. This study suggests that Sri Lanka has a poor strategy of Product, promotion and marketing information. Product,promotion and market information strategies individually and interactively showed positive correlation with sales revenue of export firms. It is concluded that, breadth of product assortment and reliability of delivery have been satisfactory while product innovation,manipularon of product assortment, frequency of advertising, personal selling, participaron in trade fairs, marketing information from main markets, resource allocation in search of marketing information, activities with local organizations and markerng intelligence have been below expected levels. Above 11 strategic factors proved contributory towards market share.
