‘Intimate Enemies’ : An Analysis of the Mother-Daughter Relationship in Punyakante Wijenaike’s The Waiting Earth
Harischandra, Neshantha
between Sellohamy and Isabella Hamy, the two female protagonists in Punyakante
Wijenaike’s The Waiting Earth. The argument presents that cultural values are at the core
of the problems between mother and daughter, among which are the preference for the
male child, the stress on housework as opposed to education, and the sexual repression
imposed on females. The essay will conclude with a deconstruction of the image of
Sellohamy popularly seen by readers and critics as the “diriya mava” of patriarchy, and
show her more to be Simone de Beauvoir’s “mater dolorosa".

Warriors, Wives and Writers- Fantasy or Reality? : Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior
Ransirini, Shamara
This paper engages in a critical discussion of one of the most basic concems underlying
contemporary literary feminism: what does it mean to “speak as" and “for" women? The
paper reviews some of the conflicting theories of white and non-white literary feminista on
the politics of representation, while analyzing Maxine Hong Kingston's memoir The Woman
Warrior. It argues that Kingston’s memoir is a text with a feminist agenda, which could be
located in the text’s strategies of narrativization. Finally the paper demonstrates how The
Woman Warrior calis for a redefinition of the genre of minority literatura, while urging for a
rethinking of western literary practicos.

Pronunciation difficulties encountered by Sinhala native speakers in learning German as a foreign language

Pronunciation difficulties encountered by Sinhala native speakers in learning German as a foreign language
Premawardhena, Neelakshi Chandrasena
German is one of the languages much in demand among the foreign languages taught in Sri Lanka. One of the major areas of difficulty in learning German as a foreign language for the Sinhala native speakers is the phonology of German. The fallacy is that English is required to master the language, especiaily its phonology discourages many a monolingual Sinhala native speaker from learning German.
This paper attempts to analyse phonological systems of Sinhala and German and identify the areas of difficulty for the Sinhala native speaker. The vowel and consonant phonemes, supra-segmental features and the syllabic structure of the two languages will be analysed to discuss the contrastive aspects of the two phonological systems. The difficulties faced by the monolingual and bilingual Sinhala native speakers in g¡asping the phonology of German are different.Henee this paper concentrates on both groups of speakers. It is also observed
that contrary to popular belief, bilingual speakers with a good command of the English language also face difficulties in grasping the phonology of German.Further, it is expected that this paper enlightens the present and future students of German as to how minimal the contrastive aspects of the two phonological systems are.
