The impact of Romantic and Free verse poetry in English on the Sinhala poetry of the Colombo and 'Nisadas' periods during the 20th century with reference to the recent history of Sinhala Poetry in Sri Lanka.

Abstract

My purpose in writing this dissertation was to prove the influence of English Romantic and Free verse poetry on Sinhala poetry of the second half of the Colombo period and Nisadas period.Therefore I brought out the characteristics of English Romantic and Free verse poetry and pointed out die resemblance between them and the Sinhala poem during the second half of the Colombo period and Nisadas period. Apart from that 1 pointed out the characteristics of Kottc, Kandyan and the first half of the Colombo periods that belong to the recent history of the second half of the Colombo period and Nisadas period to prove that the characteristics of the poetry of these periods differ from the characteristics of die second half of the Colombo period and Nisadas period in consequence of the impact of English Romantic and Free verse poetry.
