The aging population in Sri Lanka poses significant challenges and opportunities for the public sector
workforce, particularly in the context of urban development. This research examines the impact of aging
on labor force dynamics and productivity within the Greater Kandy Urban Development Programme.
Through a mixed-method approach, including surveys and interviews with public sector employees and
residents, this study assesses how age-related factors influence employee performance, adaptability to
new technologies, and overall productivity. Preliminary findings indicate that while older employees
bring valuable experience and knowledge, they face barriers to technology adoption and innovation.
Additionally, the study explores the role of training and development programmes tailored for aging
workers, highlighting their potential to enhance productivity and engagement. By providing insights into
the contributions and challenges of older workers in urban development projects, this research aims to
inform policy recommendations for improving labor force effectiveness and ensuring sustainable
development in the public sector of Sri Lanka. The findings will be critical for stakeholders aiming to
leverage the strengths of an aging workforce while addressing the evolving needs of urban governance. |
