The quick pace of modern technology has changed the face of crime prevention around the
world. From HD surveillance systems to data analytics, these technological advances are fundamentally
transforming the way societies and the government are responding to crime. This
study aims to evaluate how modern technologies are used for crime prevention in the Mirihana
Police Division and to assess public awareness and governance factors that influence their implementation.
This research provides an evaluation of the practicality and effectiveness of modern
technology in crime prevention within the Mirihana Police Division in Sri Lanka, including
an evaluation of societal awareness of crime prevention methods and governance strategies that
shape the ability to apply these technological constructs. A mixed-methods approach is utilised
in this evaluation, using a combination of primary (primary data obtained from 30 civilians who
have reported crimes to the police station through purposive sampling techniques and 5 police
officers) and secondary data through police records and literature. The findings report moderate
levels of use of modern technologies to prevent crime against a backdrop of socioeconomic
barriers, political disinterest, lack of training, and a tradition of performing practices manually.
The research draws upon the evident potential of geographic information systems, surveillance
technology, cybercrime units, and mobile tracking, but shows significant gaps in objectivity and
future scoping from institutional capacity and engagement from the public. In conclusion, it is
recommended that increased investments be made in technology, increased educational offerings
for the community, clearer governance frameworks and transparent policing to reinforce
the country’s (Sri Lanka’s) approach to reducing crime. Finally, it is recommended that a geographic
information system-based crime prevention model be developed and promoted as an
intervention method for law enforcement agencies in Sri Lanka. |
